American Airlines will no longer be connecting the popular destinations of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Cirium data revealed on November 27 that the airline would cut all flights connecting the two destinations for its summer schedule in 2024.
Adjusting the summer schedule
American Airlines was set to service FLL-LAX up to once daily during the summer of next year. However, Cirium data revealed that the airport removed these flights from its schedule. The airline was set to service this route from May to August.
American Airlines originally scheduled 25 round-trip flights in May, carrying over 10,000 passengers. The airline also scheduled once-daily nonstop services in June and July, carrying around 12,000 passengers each month. American Airlines also removed the twelve scheduled round-trip flights in August, which were set to carry nearly 5,000 passengers.
Other services from Fort Lauderdale
American Airlines will fly several other routes from Fort Lauderdale this summer in addition to its large existing operations in Miami. The airline currently offers flights to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Philadelphia International Airport (PHI), and Ronald Reagon Washington National Airport (DCA). The airline also offers seasonal flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).
Still servicing Miami
The recent discontinuation of the route connecting Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles is most likely due to the airline’s increased operations from Miami International Airport (MIA). The airline announced earlier this summer that it plans to grow seat capacity by 10% this winter. This aligns with the scheduled 380 peak-day flights and nearly 50 international destinations from Miami. The Vice President of Miami Hub Operations, Juan Carlos Liscano, spoke about the expansion, saying,
“With a more than 30 year-history at Miami International Airport, American is proud to serve as the hometown airline, providing our customers with an unparalleled network that includes unique destinations like Governor’s Harbour, Bahamas; Anguilla; and Sacramento, California. Next winter, we’re proud to continue to invest in the undisputed gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, a true point of pride for our more than 14,000 locally-based team members.”
The airline recently announced two new daily services that would operate year-round. The airline began connecting Portland International Airport (PDX) to Miami on November 5. The airline also plans to operate a daily service from Sacramento International Airport (SMF).

The airline also expanded its winter offerings, which began on November 11 and will run through March 30 next year. These services include a once-weekly flight that takes place on Saturdays. The new destinations connecting to Miami are Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) in New York, Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) in Cedar Rapids, Blue Grass Airport (LEX) in Lexington, Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT) in Wichita, and Wilmington International Airport (ILM).
The airline also plans to begin a twice-weekly service to Governor’s Harbour Airport (GHB) in the Bahamas beginning in February. American Airlines will operate an Embraer E175 aircraft between the two destinations on both Tuesdays and Saturdays. Also, in February, American Airlines will begin a twice-weekly service to Ocho Rios. This will be the airline’s third Jamaican destination.
